Take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, following the label directions
Apply a warm compress to the affected ear for 10 to 15 minutes at a time
Keep your head elevated, especially when resting
Avoid putting anything into the ear, including cotton swabs
Keep the ear dry and avoid swimming until it improves
Use over-the-counter ear drops only if the label says they are safe for ear pain and you do not have a perforated eardrum or ear tubes
Chew gum or swallow if the pain is related to pressure changes
Treat nasal congestion with saline spray or a decongestant if appropriate for you
See a doctor if the pain is severe, lasts more than a day or two, or keeps coming back
Seek urgent care if you have fever, drainage from the ear, hearing loss, dizziness, swelling, or pain after an injury
