Soak the foot in warm water for 15–20 minutes, 3–4 times a day
Keep the foot clean and dry between soaks
Gently lift the nail edge with clean cotton or dental floss if it is not too painful
Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if recommended by a healthcare professional
Wear roomy shoes or open-toe footwear
Avoid tight socks and pressure on the toe
Trim toenails straight across, not too short
Do not cut or dig into the corners of the nail
Do not try to cut out the ingrown part yourself
Use over-the-counter pain relief if needed and safe for you
See a doctor or podiatrist if there is severe pain, swelling, pus, redness spreading, or no improvement
Seek urgent care if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or signs of infection
