Apply a cold compress for 10 to 20 minutes at a time during the first 24 to 48 hours
Repeat the cold compress every 1 to 2 hours while awake
Keep your head elevated
Rest and avoid strenuous activity
Use acetaminophen for pain if needed
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen during the first 24 hours if possible
Switch to warm compresses after 48 hours
Do not press on the eye
Do not blow your nose if the injury may involve facial trauma
Avoid rubbing the area
Protect the eye from further injury
Seek medical care if you have vision changes, severe pain, blood in the eye, double vision, vomiting, loss of consciousness, or worsening swelling
