Cut the bushes down to ground level with pruning shears, loppers, or a saw
Dig out the roots with a shovel, mattock, or digging bar
Use a stump grinder for thick stems or large root crowns
Pull out small bushes with a garden fork or weed puller after watering the soil
Cut the bush repeatedly at the base to weaken regrowth
Cover the area with a tarp or heavy mulch to block sunlight and suppress regrowth
Apply an appropriate herbicide to freshly cut stems if permitted and needed
Remove all debris, roots, and remaining root pieces from the soil
Fill the hole with soil and compact it level
Replant grass, ground cover, or other desired plants to prevent regrowth
