Keep children and pets away from the area immediately

If the snake is indoors, close the door to the room if it can be done safely
If the snake is outdoors, watch it from a safe distance until help arrives
Remove hiding places such as wood piles, brush, tall grass, rock piles, and debris
Trim grass, shrubs, and low branches around the property
Seal gaps, holes, and openings around foundations, doors, vents, and crawl spaces
Store firewood and building materials off the ground and away from the house
Keep food sources away by securing pet food and controlling rodents
Use outdoor lighting carefully to reduce snake-preferred hiding areas near entrances
Wear boots and long pants when working in areas where snakes may be present
If bitten, call emergency services or poison control immediately and seek urgent medical care
Do not cut, suck, ice, or apply a tourniquet to a snakebite
Do not try to capture or kill the snake for identification
