Remove all food sources: store food in sealed containers, cover garbage, clean spills, and wipe counters daily
Empty trash frequently and rinse bins
Fix leaks and eliminate standing water (pet bowls, damp mops, clogged drains)
Clean drains regularly and use a drain brush; pour boiling water or an approved drain cleaner as appropriate
Seal entry points: repair window screens, weatherstripping, door sweeps, gaps around pipes and vents
Install door/window screens and use fans near entrances to reduce fly entry
Use fly traps: sticky traps indoors and baited traps placed away from food prep areas
Set out appropriate baits for fruit flies (vinegar + dish soap) and for house flies (commercial bait stations)
Use indoor insect light traps in suitable areas
Vacuum flies and dispose of the vacuum bag/contents immediately
For immediate knockdown, use an indoor fly spray labeled for flies; follow label directions
Use residual insecticides only where label permits (cracks/crevices, around entry points), following safety instructions
Remove or manage outdoor attractants: keep compost covered, mow grass, remove fallen fruit, and keep outdoor bins closed
If flies persist, identify the source (trash, drains, pet waste, compost, plants) and treat that specific source
Contact a licensed pest control professional if infestations continue after cleaning and sealing
