Use an over-the-counter antifungal cream such as terbinafine, clotrimazole, miconazole, or tolnaftate
Apply the cream exactly as directed on the package, usually once or twice daily
Continue treatment for the full recommended time, even after the rash looks better
Keep the affected area clean and completely dry
Wash hands after touching the rash
Do not share towels, clothing, combs, hats, or bedding
Change underwear, socks, and workout clothes daily
Wash clothes, towels, and bedding in hot water if possible
Avoid tight, sweaty clothing
Keep pets checked and treated by a veterinarian if they may be the source
Avoid scratching the area
Use a separate towel for the infected area
See a doctor if it is on the scalp, face, nails, or groin
See a doctor if it is widespread, painful, swollen, or not improving after 1 to 2 weeks
Use prescription treatment if advised by a doctor
