Rest your voice and avoid talking loudly
Avoid smoking, vaping, and alcohol
Avoid irritants like dry air, strong fragrances, and pollution
Use saline nasal spray or rinse if you have post-nasal drip
Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed (ibuprofen or acetaminophen)
Consider over-the-counter throat sprays or numbing lozenges as directed
If allergies are suspected, use an OTC antihistamine as directed
Replace your toothbrush after you start feeling better to reduce reinfection
Seek urgent care or emergency help if you have trouble breathing, drooling, inability to swallow, severe worsening pain, or a stiff neck
Contact a clinician promptly if symptoms last more than 3–5 days, are severe, you have fever over 103°F (39.4°C), a rash, recurrent sore throats, or you suspect strep throat (e.g., sudden fever, no cough, swollen tender neck glands)
Get tested and treated for strep if recommended by a clinician
