Keep the nail clean and dry
Trim the nail straight across and keep it short
File down thickened nail surfaces carefully
Change socks daily, or more often if sweaty
Wear breathable shoes
Rotate shoes and let them dry fully between uses
Use antifungal creams, sprays, or powders as directed
Apply prescription topical antifungal treatment if prescribed
Take oral antifungal medication if prescribed by a doctor
Disinfect nail tools after each use
Do not share nail clippers, files, socks, or shoes
Wear shower shoes in public locker rooms and pools
Treat athlete’s foot if present
Replace old shoes or insoles if they may be contaminated
See a doctor if the nail is painful, spreading, or not improving
Seek medical care sooner if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system
