Elevate the hand above heart level for 5–10 minutes
Apply ice to the finger for 5–10 minutes to reduce swelling
Lubricate the finger and ring with soap, lotion, oil, or petroleum jelly
Gently twist the ring while pulling it off
Use a string or dental floss to compress the finger and move the ring upward
Try the ring removal after soaking the hand in cool water
Stop if pain increases or the finger turns blue, pale, or numb
Seek urgent medical help if the ring will not come off or swelling is severe
Have a jeweler or emergency department cut the ring off if needed
