Wash your hands and the area with soap and warm water
Clean the skin and splinter with rubbing alcohol or antiseptic
Use tweezers to grasp the exposed end of the splinter and pull it out in the same direction it entered
If the splinter is under the skin, sterilize a needle and gently lift the skin over the tip
Use the needle to expose enough of the splinter to grab with tweezers
Pull the splinter out slowly and steadily
Wash the area again after removal
Apply antiseptic ointment and a clean bandage
Soak the foot in warm water if the splinter is hard to remove
Use tape to remove very small, superficial splinters
Do not squeeze the skin around the splinter
Do not dig deeply into the skin
Seek medical help if the splinter is deep, near a joint, made of glass or metal, or cannot be removed
Seek medical help if there is redness, swelling, pus, severe pain, or fever
Seek medical help if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system
