How To Give CPR?

Check the scene for danger

Tap the person and shout to see if they respond

Call emergency services or have someone else call

Get an AED if one is available

Place the person on their back on a firm surface

Open the airway

Check for normal breathing for no more than 10 seconds

If not breathing normally, start chest compressions

Place the heel of one hand on the center of the chest

Put the other hand on top and interlock fingers

Keep arms straight and shoulders over hands

Push hard and fast at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute

Compress the chest about 2 inches in adults

Allow the chest to fully recoil after each compression

Give 30 chest compressions

Give 2 rescue breaths if trained and willing

Continue cycles of 30 compressions and 2 breaths

Use the AED as soon as it is ready

Follow the AED prompts

Keep going until emergency help arrives

Stop only if the person starts breathing normally, an AED tells you to stop, or you are too exhausted to continue
