How To Give A Cat A Pill?

Choose a pill method (pill pocket, crushed pill in wet food, or direct pill placement)

Use gloves if needed and keep the cat calm in a quiet room

Have supplies ready: pill, treats, wet food or pill pockets, small towel or blanket, water syringe (optional), and treats

If using a pill pocket, hide the pill inside and offer immediately

If crushing is allowed for the specific medication, crush the pill and mix with a small amount of wet food; offer a small portion and confirm the cat eats all of it

If direct placement is needed, wrap the cat snugly in a towel to limit movement, leaving head accessible

Hold the cat’s head so the nose points slightly upward

Open the mouth by pressing gently on the jaw or using a finger at the side of the mouth

Place the pill as far back on the tongue as possible without forcing it

Keep the mouth closed and hold the cat’s head up until the cat swallows

Release and immediately offer a treat or small amount of wet food

Check the mouth after a few seconds to ensure the pill is swallowed (avoid letting the cat spit it out)

If the cat won’t swallow, try again with a fresh pill attempt and offer a treat right after swallowing

For water after the dose, offer a small amount of water by syringe only if your veterinarian approves and the cat is willing

If the pill is a capsule that cannot be opened or crushed, use direct placement or a pill pocket

Stop and contact your veterinarian if the cat shows breathing trouble, repeated refusal, or you cannot confirm swallowing
