Wash your hands and warm them up
Ask the person to lie face down comfortably
Use a pillow under the chest or ankles if needed
Apply a small amount of massage oil or lotion to your hands
Start with light strokes from the lower back up to the shoulders
Use both hands and keep movements slow and even
Gently knead the muscles along either side of the spine
Avoid pressing directly on the spine
Work on the shoulders and upper back with circular motions
Use your thumbs for small, firm pressure on tight areas
Check in about pressure and comfort often
Spend extra time on tense spots without causing pain
Finish with long, soothing strokes down the back
Wipe off excess oil if needed
Help the person sit up slowly when finished
