Choose green onions (scallions) with roots attached, or buy bunches with white stems and roots
Use a container with drainage holes, at least 6–8 in (15–20 cm) deep
Fill with potting mix (loose, well-draining)
Plant method:
For regrowth: place rooted green onions in the soil with roots down and tops above the soil line
Space plants 1–2 in (2.5–5 cm) apart
Water thoroughly after planting
Place in full sun to partial sun (aim for 6+ hours light daily)
Keep soil evenly moist; water when the top 1 in (2.5 cm) feels dry
Fertilize every 2–4 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer (follow label rates)
Trim: cut green tops 1–2 in (2.5–5 cm) above the soil; leave about 1–2 in of stem and roots for regrowth
Harvest when greens are long enough to use; repeat trims as regrowth allows
For faster, thicker growth, rotate the container every few days toward the light
If growing from seed: sow thinly in rows, cover lightly with soil, and keep evenly moist until emergence
Thin seedlings to 1–2 in (2.5–5 cm) apart after they establish
Expect regrowth from store-bought rooted onions for several cut cycles (often 2–4) before replacing
Manage pests by checking leaves regularly and removing affected foliage early
If leaves yellow or growth slows, increase light and ensure consistent moisture and feeding
