Wash your hands thoroughly
Find a comfortable, private place
Gently massage your breasts for a minute or two
Place a clean container under your nipple
Position your thumb above the areola and your fingers below it, forming a C shape
Press back toward your chest wall
Compress the breast tissue together, then release
Repeat the press-and-release motion rhythmically
Move your fingers around the areola to empty different areas of the breast
Switch to the other breast when milk flow slows
Alternate breasts as needed
Store the milk in a clean, covered container
Refrigerate or freeze the milk promptly
