Turn off the garbage disposal
Unplug it or switch off the circuit breaker
Remove any visible debris with tongs or pliers
Pour ice cubes into the disposal
Add a handful of coarse salt
Run cold water
Turn on the disposal for a few seconds
Cut a lemon or lime into pieces
Run the citrus pieces through the disposal
Flush with cold water for 30 seconds
Scrub the rubber splash guard with a brush and dish soap
Clean the sink drain opening with a sponge or cloth
Rinse everything thoroughly
Restore power to the disposal
Run cold water and the disposal briefly to finish cleaning
