Plan the layout and measure the area
Choose outdoor-rated string lights and hardware
Test the lights before installation
Mark anchor points for each end and any support points
Install hooks, eye screws, poles, or mounting brackets
Use a sturdy support structure such as a wall, fence, tree, or post
Attach guide wire or cable if needed for extra support
Hang the lights from the anchor points
Secure the lights with clips, zip ties, or light hangers
Keep bulbs clear of heat, water, and sharp edges
Leave slight slack to prevent tension on the cord
Plug the lights into a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet
Use an outdoor-rated extension cord if needed
Add a timer or smart plug if desired
Check that all connections are weatherproof
Inspect the setup after wind or rain and tighten as needed
