Cool the burn under cool running water for 10 to 20 minutes
Remove rings, watches, or tight clothing near the area
Gently clean the area with mild soap and water
Pat the skin dry with a clean towel
Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or aloe vera gel
Cover with a clean, nonstick bandage if needed
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen
Avoid ice, butter, toothpaste, or ointments with fragrance
Avoid popping any blisters if they appear
Protect the area from sun exposure
Seek medical care if the burn is large, severe, on the face, hands, feet, or genitals, or shows signs of infection
