Rest and avoid activities that worsen pain or strain the chest

Take pain relievers as directed by a healthcare professional
Breathe deeply and cough gently several times an hour to help prevent lung complications
Support the injured area with a pillow when coughing or moving
Avoid wrapping or tightly binding the chest
Avoid smoking and vaping
Sleep in a position that reduces pain, often upright or on the uninjured side
Return to normal activity gradually as pain improves
Seek urgent care if you develop shortness of breath, worsening chest pain, fever, coughing up blood, or dizziness
