Rest the ankle and avoid activities that cause pain
Ice the ankle for 15–20 minutes every 2–3 hours for the first 48 hours
Compress the ankle with an elastic bandage or ankle wrap
Elevate the ankle above heart level as often as possible
Use crutches if walking is painful
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if safe for you
Start gentle range-of-motion exercises when pain and swelling begin to improve
Wear a supportive brace or wrap during recovery
Avoid heat, alcohol, and massage during the first 48 hours
Gradually return to activity only when you can walk without pain
See a doctor if you cannot bear weight, have severe swelling, or suspect a fracture
