Start antiviral treatment as soon as tingling or burning begins: valacyclovir, famciclovir, or acyclovir if prescribed
Use docosanol 10% cream at the first sign and apply as directed
Apply a cold compress for 5 to 10 minutes several times a day
Keep the area clean and dry
Use petroleum jelly or lip balm to prevent cracking
Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain if you can use them safely
Avoid picking, popping, or peeling the sore
Avoid kissing and oral sex until fully healed
Do not share cups, utensils, towels, or lip products
Wash hands after touching your face or applying treatment
Get enough sleep and reduce stress
Avoid acidic, salty, or spicy foods if they irritate the sore
See a clinician urgently if the sore is near the eye, you have fever or severe symptoms, or sores are frequent or not healing
