Rest the ankle and avoid activities that cause pain
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time every 2–3 hours for the first 48 hours
Use a compression bandage or wrap to reduce swelling
Elevate the ankle above heart level when possible
Keep weight off the ankle if walking is painful
Use crutches or a brace if needed
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if safe for you
Gently move the ankle as pain allows after the first day or two
Watch for increasing swelling, bruising, or severe pain
Seek medical care if you cannot bear weight, have deformity, numbness, or worsening symptoms
