How To Test Ignition Coil With Multimeter?

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery negative terminal

Locate the ignition coil

Disconnect the coil electrical connectors

Set the multimeter to ohms

Measure primary resistance across the coil primary terminals

Compare the reading to the manufacturer specification

Measure secondary resistance between the high-voltage terminal and the primary terminal

Compare the reading to the manufacturer specification

Check for continuity between coil terminals and ground

Set the multimeter to voltage

Reconnect the battery

Turn the ignition key to ON

Check for power at the coil positive terminal

Check for ground signal at the coil control terminal while cranking

Inspect for open circuit, short circuit, or out-of-spec readings

Replace the ignition coil if readings are outside specification
