Use over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed on the label
Apply a warm compress to the affected ear for 10 to 15 minutes at a time
Rest and keep the head elevated
Stay hydrated
Avoid putting anything into the ear
Keep the ear dry
Use prescribed ear drops exactly as directed if a doctor has prescribed them
Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke
Seek medical care if pain is severe, fever is high, drainage occurs, hearing worsens, or symptoms do not improve
