Lift the tail gently and look at the area below the anus
Male cats usually have two openings farther apart
Female cats usually have two openings closer together
Male cats often have a round genital opening
Female cats often have a vertical slit-shaped genital opening
Male kittens may have a small space between the anus and genital opening
Female kittens usually have a shorter distance between the anus and genital opening
Check for testicles in intact male cats
Testicles may be visible or felt as two small lumps under the tail
If the cat is neutered, testicles may not be visible
Compare the cat’s anatomy with a known male or female cat if possible
If unsure, ask a veterinarian to confirm the gender
