Park on a level surface and let the brakes cool
Turn the steering wheel for better access to the front wheels
Safely lift the vehicle and secure it with jack stands if needed
Remove the wheel
Locate the brake caliper and brake pads
Check pad thickness through the caliper opening
Compare the pad material to the backing plate
Look for wear indicators or grooves on the pad surface
Inspect both inner and outer pads
Check for uneven wear between pads
Look for cracks, glazing, chipping, or contamination
Inspect the brake rotor for scoring or damage
Reinstall the wheel and torque the lug nuts properly
Repeat for the other wheels
Replace pads if they are near the minimum thickness or show damage
