Turn off power at the breaker
Verify the circuit is dead with a voltage tester
Plan the light locations and check for joists, pipes, and wiring
Mark the cutout locations on the ceiling
Cut the ceiling openings with the correct template
Run electrical cable to each opening
Install approved recessed light housings or remodel cans
Secure the housings according to the manufacturer’s instructions
Strip the cable ends and connect the wires
Connect ground, neutral, and hot wires properly
Install the trim and bulb or integrated LED module
Restore power and test each light
Seal any gaps if required
Patch and paint around the openings if needed
