Measure each stair tread and riser
Remove old carpet, staples, nails, and debris
Inspect and repair any damaged stair surfaces
Cut carpet pad to fit each tread, if using pad
Attach pad securely with staples or adhesive
Cut carpet into stair-sized strips with extra allowance
Start at the top stair and work downward
Position the carpet on the first tread and riser
Secure the carpet at the back of the tread with staples
Stretch the carpet tightly over the tread nose
Fasten the carpet under the nose and along the riser
Smooth out wrinkles and bubbles as you go
Repeat for each stair, keeping edges aligned
Trim excess carpet neatly at the sides
Tuck and secure carpet edges along the stair sides
Install stair rods or trim if desired
Check all staples and seams for tightness
Vacuum the finished stairs to remove loose fibers
