Choose the shortest, straightest vent route to the exterior

Check local building codes and dryer manufacturer requirements

Gather dryer vent duct, clamps, vent hood, foil tape, screws, drill, and tools

Disconnect the dryer from the existing vent, if present

Cut the vent opening in the wall or use an existing exterior vent opening

Install the exterior vent hood with a backdraft damper

Seal around the exterior vent hood with exterior-grade caulk

Attach the vent duct to the dryer exhaust outlet

Secure the duct with a metal clamp

Run the duct to the exterior vent hood with minimal bends

Keep the duct as short and straight as possible

Use rigid or semi-rigid metal ducting

Avoid plastic or foil accordion ducting

Connect the duct to the exterior vent hood

Secure all joints with metal clamps

Seal joints with foil tape, not screws through the duct

Ensure the duct does not sag or kink

Keep the vent line accessible for cleaning

Push the dryer back into place without crushing the duct

Restore power to the dryer

Test the dryer for proper airflow and exhaust outside

Inspect for air leaks and correct any loose connections
