Measure the wall and decide the wainscoting height
Remove outlet covers, baseboards, and any wall fixtures in the work area
Locate and mark wall studs
Repair holes, clean the wall, and ensure the surface is dry and smooth
Cut panels, boards, or molding to size
Dry fit all pieces before attaching
Apply construction adhesive to the back of each panel or board
Position the wainscoting on the wall and press firmly
Secure pieces to studs with finishing nails or brad nails
Keep pieces level and evenly spaced as you install
Install top rail, chair rail, and trim pieces
Fill nail holes and seams with wood filler or caulk
Sand smooth after filler dries
Prime and paint or stain the wainscoting
Reinstall baseboards, outlet covers, and fixtures
