Use a squirrel-proof feeder with weight-activated perches
Hang the feeder on a smooth metal pole with a baffle
Place the feeder at least 10 feet from trees, fences, and structures
Suspend the feeder from a wire with a baffle above it
Use safflower seed or other squirrel-resistant bird seed
Offer squirrels a separate feeder away from the bird feeder
Keep the area under and around the feeder clear of launch points
Mount the feeder on a pole with a squirrel guard
Grease or oil the pole only if safe for birds and local regulations
Use a feeder cage that allows small birds in but blocks squirrels
Move the feeder regularly to reduce squirrel access patterns
Clean up spilled seed promptly
Avoid platform feeders if squirrels are a problem
Choose feeders with short, slippery hanging points
Install a dome or umbrella-style baffle above the feeder
Trim branches and remove nearby climbing routes
Use hot pepper-treated seed only if appropriate for the bird species
Check and repair any gaps or weak points in feeder hardware
