Choose medium-weight yarn and knitting needles in the size recommended on the yarn label
Make a slip knot
Cast on 20 to 30 stitches for a beginner scarf
Hold the needle with the cast-on stitches in your left hand
Insert the right needle into the first stitch
Wrap the yarn around the right needle
Pull the new loop through the stitch
Slip the old stitch off the left needle
Repeat the knit stitch across the row
Turn the work at the end of the row
Knit every row to make a garter stitch scarf
Continue until the scarf reaches your desired length
Cast off when finished
Cut the yarn, leaving a tail
Pull the tail through the last loop and tighten
Weave in the loose ends with a yarn needle
