Open the grill vents
Remove the cooking grate
Stack charcoal in a mound or chimney starter
Add lighter fluid only if using that method, then wait a few minutes
Light the charcoal with a long match or lighter
Let the coals burn until they are mostly covered with gray ash
Spread the coals into an even layer if needed
Replace the cooking grate
Adjust the vents to control the heat
