Sit down and rest quietly for 5–10 minutes

Avoid caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and exercise
Loosen tight clothing
Drink a glass of water if you may be dehydrated
Recheck your blood pressure after resting
Take prescribed blood pressure medicine exactly as directed
If you missed a dose, take it only if your doctor has told you to do so
Use a quiet, calm environment and reduce stress
If your blood pressure is 180/120 or higher, seek urgent medical care
Seek emergency help immediately if you have chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headache, confusion, weakness, numbness, vision changes, or trouble speaking
