Choose hardwood such as maple, walnut, cherry, or oak
Cut the wood into strips of equal length and width
Plane or sand the strips so all pieces are flat and even
Arrange the strips in the desired pattern
Apply food-safe wood glue to the edges
Clamp the pieces together tightly
Let the glue dry completely
Scrape off excess glue
Trim the board to final size if needed
Sand all surfaces and edges smooth
Round over the corners and edges
Apply food-safe mineral oil or cutting board finish
Let the finish soak in and wipe off excess
Repeat oiling as needed before use
