Chop or grate chocolate into small pieces
Heat milk in a saucepan over medium heat
Add the chocolate to the warm milk
Stir continuously until the chocolate melts completely
Add sugar if desired
Add a pinch of salt if desired
Add vanilla extract if desired
Keep stirring until smooth and hot
Pour into a mug
Top with whipped cream or marshmallows if desired
