Choose a container with a lid
Drill small air holes in the lid and sides
Add drainage holes in the bottom
Place a tray or second container underneath to catch liquid
Add bedding material such as shredded newspaper, cardboard, coconut coir, or dry leaves
Moisten the bedding until it feels like a wrung-out sponge
Add a small amount of soil or finished compost
Add red wigglers or other composting worms
Bury food scraps under the bedding
Feed worms fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea bags, and crushed eggshells
Avoid meat, dairy, oily foods, and salty foods
Keep the bedding damp but not soggy
Keep the farm in a cool, shaded place
Fluff the bedding occasionally for airflow
Add more bedding when the material gets low
Harvest compost when most bedding has turned dark and crumbly
Separate worms from finished compost and return worms to fresh bedding
