Place bratwurst in a skillet or sauté pan
Add enough water, beer, or broth to cover the bottom of the pan
Set the pan over medium heat
Bring the liquid to a gentle simmer
Cover the pan
Cook the brats for 10 to 12 minutes, turning once
Remove the lid and let the liquid cook off
Add a little oil or butter if needed
Brown the brats over medium to medium-high heat
Turn frequently until evenly browned
Cook until the internal temperature reaches 160°F
Remove from the pan and let rest for a few minutes
Serve hot
