Take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, if safe for you
Apply a warm compress to the affected ear for 10 to 15 minutes
Keep the ear dry
Sleep with your head elevated
Avoid putting cotton swabs, drops, or objects into the ear unless prescribed
Chew gum or swallow if the pain is related to pressure changes
Use a saline nasal spray if earache is related to congestion
Rest and stay hydrated
Avoid loud noise and pressure changes
See a doctor if the pain is severe, lasts more than a day or two, or is accompanied by fever, drainage, hearing loss, or swelling
