Apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth for 10–20 minutes at a time during the first 24–48 hours
Rest the injured area and avoid activities that worsen the bruise
Elevate the bruised area above heart level when possible
Use a compression bandage if appropriate and not too tight
After 48 hours, use warm compresses for 10–20 minutes at a time to improve blood flow
Take acetaminophen for pain if needed
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen in the first 24 hours if possible, since they may increase bleeding
Eat foods rich in vitamin C and vitamin K
Stay hydrated
Avoid smoking
Protect the bruise from further injury
Seek medical care if bruises are frequent, very large, very painful, or occur without clear cause
