Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C)
Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper
Place a wire rack on the baking sheet if you want less grease
Shape ground beef into burger patties
Season both sides with salt and pepper
Make a small indentation in the center of each patty
Place the patties on the prepared baking sheet or rack
Bake for 15 to 20 minutes
Flip the patties halfway through cooking
Add cheese during the last 1 to 2 minutes if desired
Check that the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) for beef
Toast burger buns in the oven if desired
Assemble with buns and toppings of choice
Serve immediately
