Chill the heavy cream
Pour the heavy cream into a stand mixer, food processor, or jar
Whip or shake the cream until it separates into butter and buttermilk
Drain off the buttermilk
Rinse the butter under cold water
Press or knead out any remaining liquid
Add salt if desired
Shape or store the butter in a container or wrap it for refrigeration
