Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat
Add 1 small chopped onion and cook until soft
Add 2 to 4 minced garlic cloves and cook for 30 seconds
Stir in 1 can crushed tomatoes or whole peeled tomatoes, crushed by hand
Add 1 teaspoon salt
Add 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Add 1 teaspoon dried oregano
Add 1 teaspoon dried basil
Add 1/2 teaspoon sugar, optional
Add a pinch of red pepper flakes, optional
Bring to a simmer
Reduce heat to low
Cook for 20 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally
Taste and adjust seasoning
Stir in fresh basil, optional
Serve over pasta, pizza, or use as desired
