Open the map in a Cartography Table
Place the map in the left slot
Add paper in the right slot
Take the zoomed-out map from the result slot
Repeat with paper to make it bigger again
Each upgrade increases the map coverage area
Maximum map size is 4 upgrades
Use a Cartography Table instead of a crafting table
If the map is already max size, it cannot be made bigger further
