Apply a cold compress or ice wrapped in cloth for 10 to 15 minutes at a time
Keep your head elevated
Avoid touching, rubbing, or biting the lip
Rinse gently with cool water if irritation is from food or debris
Use an over-the-counter antihistamine if swelling is from an allergic reaction and you can take it safely
Use an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed and safe for you
Avoid spicy, salty, hot, or acidic foods and drinks
Avoid smoking, alcohol, and lip products that may irritate the area
If the lip is injured, clean it gently and apply a cold compress
Seek urgent medical care if you have trouble breathing, swallowing, or swelling of the tongue or throat
Seek medical care if swelling is severe, worsening, lasts more than 24 to 48 hours, or is caused by infection, a bite, or a cut that looks infected
