Apply a cold compress or ice wrapped in a cloth for 10–15 minutes at a time
Keep your head elevated
Avoid touching, rubbing, or biting the lip
Rinse with cool water if the swelling is from irritation
Take an over-the-counter antihistamine if the swelling is from an allergic reaction and you can safely use it
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed and safe for you
Avoid hot, spicy, salty, or acidic foods and drinks
Avoid smoking and alcohol
Use a lip balm with SPF if sunburn caused the swelling
Apply aloe vera gel if the skin is irritated and not broken
Seek urgent medical care if you have trouble breathing, tongue swelling, severe pain, fever, pus, or rapidly worsening swelling
