Measure 1/2 cup oats
Add 1 cup water or milk to a saucepan
Bring the liquid to a boil
Stir in the oats
Reduce heat to low
Cook for 5 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally
Add more liquid if needed
Remove from heat when the oats are soft and thick
Add salt, honey, fruit, nuts, or cinnamon if desired
Serve warm
