Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for 15–20 minutes at a time, then take breaks
Keep your head elevated while lying down or sleeping
Take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain reliever if you can safely use it and it is appropriate for you
Rinse gently with warm salt water before bed
Avoid hot foods, hard foods, spicy foods, alcohol, and smoking
Do not poke, press, or massage the swollen area
Drink plenty of water
Rest as much as possible
Use any prescribed medication exactly as directed
Seek urgent dental or medical care if swelling is severe, spreading, or comes with fever, trouble swallowing, or trouble breathing
