Use a ruler, tape measure, or measuring tape marked in inches
Place the zero mark at the starting point
Read the number at the ending point
Count each full inch mark
Count the smaller marks between inches for fractions
Use the longest line for whole inches
Use shorter lines for halves, quarters, eighths, or sixteenths
Keep the measuring tool straight and aligned with the object
Record the measurement in inches or inches and fractions of an inch
